Tough HR job

I hardly write about human resource stuff in my blog, but today, I had a chat with one of my friend who is also in the same line with me.
This friend on mine joined his current company last year and have been given the task to handle the Human Resources Dept., and most of the time he will be dealing with the oil and gas companies, like most of us in Miri. I decided to visit his office and I was saddened by what I see and made to understand.
No telephone, no printer, no computer, no no no .. but just a table and chair! How would he manage the HR Dept with just that!! Going around the building with my wifi-enabled PDA, I managed to located a low signal from the nearby deConneXion services. The signal was too low to be utilised anyway.
Me: Bro, how many staff do you have eh?
Him: 18 contract staff and myself.
Me: What are your task anyway?
Him: Well.. I received a lot of resume everyday via the postal mail and in the tens via email. I will need to filter and sort it out. It is much easier electronically than the hardcopy. The hardcopies will be to be re-type and save in my computer so easy searching.
Me: Ahh.. that is why you always encourage people to submit their resume via email. For faster and easy searching.
To be cont’d.//

Really feeling like OMG!!! HR personnel supposed to deal with outsiders most of the time. Immigration, applicants, Labour Depts., Banks, LHDN etc etc…how come no computer, no fax, no printer??? surprised!!!

Florence, they have a common office and all are standalone. The only line connecting the office to the outside world is a CDMA Wireless TM line. Hence, it is not possible to connect it to a PABX system. Printer-wise, they all have to share a “moveable” inkjet printer - plug and print.

Opss…it’s really a tough HR job…*sweating* ^_^ But I think is a good training for them to work in this kind of environment. Next time, they can work and stand with any kind of working condition.

bro,
ur fren can look for refurbished laserjet printer, or pc..my suggestion is to get DELL for the best service..
for internet access, maybe u can ask deconnexion for a fixed access(they offer this in Kuching) or get a wifi usb extender

No virus etc. My staff cannot play games etc at the station too….
